STOCKPORT, U.K. - June 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Dr Richard Wilson, a retired consultant paediatrician and a trustee of veteran children’s charity Action for Sick Children has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his work for vulnerable children and bereaved people.

The 76 year old doctor who lives in Portsmouth was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and now he hopes the accolade will serve to further promote those charities which he supports.

Speaking about his award, the former paediatrician who spent most of his career working in the Greater London area said: “It’s great to have been given this honour, but I hope it helps to raise the profile of what I genuinely care about.

“I found that bereaved children often get ignored and that it can have lasting consequences, and so a lot of my work has been around that.”

Dr Wilson was one of the first clinicians to identify and discuss the trauma of bereavement on children and families. He is also an expert on sudden infant death and the devastating impact it has on families.

When he became a consultant in 1973 he was concerned about the high rate of stillbirths and cot deaths and held a weekly clinic for bereaved parents. He was Adviser to Surrey SANDS, a self help group for those who lose a baby during pregnancy or around the time of birth.

He also worked with the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths to instigate the ‘Reduce the Risk’ Campaign. Dr Wilson became involved with Action for Sick Children when it was known as NAWCH (the National Association for Welfare of Children in Hospital). He was a valued early supporter who chaired national conferences, spoke out in the press, and became a member of the Professional Advisory Committee.

A spokesperson for Action for Sick Children said: “Dr Wilson is a very deserving recipient of this MBE. He is undoubtedly driven by a strong desire to improve outcomes for children and their families, particularly the most vulnerable groups in our society.

“He has devoted his life to the well-being of children and families and we are delighted to see this recognition of his achievements.”
