Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County Awards over $40,000 in Scholarships to Local Club Youth

MONTEREY, Calif. - June 23, 2014 - PRLog -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County’s (BGCMC) annual Community Breakfast on Thursday, June 19, 2014 celebrated the achievements of six Club members, who were awarded over $40,000 in scholarships. Over 300 community members came together to enjoy a delicious, hot breakfast and celebrate the achievements of these scholarship recipients. The six scholarships were provided by local community partners like Paul West, Founder of the Give Back Brands Foundation. West stated, “I felt very grateful and honored to have awarded this young lady with the Give Back Brands Scholarship, and I am so proud of her accomplishments. We plan on supporting BGCMC in the future.”

About the Scholarship Recipients

Roberto M. —2014 Great Futures Scholarship Recipient

Roberto is a recent graduate from Seaside High school. He has been a Club member for 9 years. He plans on using his Great Futures Scholarship to pursue a Business Degree at California State University Monterey Bay this Fall. His ultimate goal is to open up his own restaurant to share his interest in cultural food with others.

Natasha G.—2014 Give Back Brands Scholarship Recipient

Natasha is a sixteen-year-old Club member and is the 2014 Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County Youth of the Year. Graduating a year early from Everett Alvarez High School, she will enroll at Hartnell College for her general education and then transfer to San Jose State or UC Santa Cruz. She plans to use the Give Back Brands Scholarship to help her reach her goal of becoming a Federal Agent.

Jessica V. —2014 Rotary Club of Seaside—Barbara Ann Hawkins Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Jessica is the current Seaside Clubhouse Youth of the Year and a junior at Seaside High School. She has been a Club member for the past 2 years. She plans to use the Barbara Ann Hawkins Memorial Scholarship to help her get her degree in Early Childhood Education. She aspires to become an elementary school teacher.

Michael V.—2014  Marilyn Kirby Scholarship Recipient

Michael is a Club alum. His love of basketball started as a young boy at the Club and has translated into a career as a coach and mentor to many of our Club members. The Marilyn Kirby Scholarship will help Michael towards finishing his degree at California State University Monterey Bay.

Naomi D.—2014 Club Blue Enrichment Scholarship Recipient

Naomi is a sixteen-year-old Club member and active participant in Club leadership groups like Keystone and Torch club. She is a senior at Seaside High School and avid basketball player. She will be using her scholarship to attend clinics and compete in the Las Vegas “Jam On It” basketball tournament.

Alexus S. —2014 Club Blue Enrichment Scholarship Recipient

Alexus is an incoming freshman at Seaside High School. She is a fourteen-year-old Club member. She will use her Club Blue Enrichment Scholarship to purchase a laptop. She will be able to be more productive in her school work and continue her 4.0 GPA.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) has played an integral role in the community for over 45 years.  BGCMC provides a safe haven for over 800 children and teens a day, offering programs that focus on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, Good Character & Leadership. BGCMC operates Clubhouses in Seaside and Salinas, extension sites at El Sausal and La Paz Middle Schools, and a site at the CHISPA Sea Garden Community in Castroville.  Nearly 90% of the total budget comes from generous individuals, corporations and foundations.
