Aside from being an entertaining read, ‘Winter Soon’ is also a book that raises intriguing questions related to morality, choice, and doing the right thing. The main character, John, is a man who was forced to make a decision that later changed his entire life. He unwillingly participated in the accidental death of an innocent man, and now he finds it impossible to live with the guilt. Even though he did what he thought was right at the moment in order to protect himself and his friends, John knows that his choice was wrong. All he wants is to make things right and obtain forgiveness.
The story begins in the spring of 1973, when John and his two best friends, Meech and Hoxie, go trout fishing in Maine’s Moosehead wilderness. There is a lot of tension between Meech and Hoxie because Meech believes that Hoxie is to blame for his and his wife’s breakup. One of their confrontations lead to the death of a game warden, and this tragic accident unifies the three friends. They decide to hide the body and leave the place as soon as possible. As they expected, no one suspects them, so they are free to go back to New Jersey and pretend that nothing happened.
John, however, feels the need to return to Greenville, the game warden’s town, and see how the investigation progresses. He finds the man’s wife, and when he sees that she is pregnant, he decides to help her in the hope that she will understand why he did what he did and will find the power to forgive him. However, new twists intervene, and John’s life is once again turned upside down.
