SEATTLE - June 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Internet security in Kenya, or the lack of it, has made the country prone to cyber attacks. In the recently published “Kenya Cyber Security Report 2014 - Rethinking Cyber Security”, it states that the country sits at number 4 as the country with the highest incidence of internet crime with the US, Brazil, and China leading the way.

The growing number of attacks on many Kenyan firms has pushed these organizations to try and improve their data security. Some of the most common threats used by internet criminals were identified as social media, voice over IP, and insiders.

Even with the improved security, preventing almost all online banking and money fraud along with Botnet and service hacks, internet criminals find other ways to perform their deeds. This is partly because of internet service availability.

According to the report, Kenya hasn’t identified a proper strategy they’re going to use to fight off cyber terrorism in their shores. This problem has made their most important industries (finance, energy, telecommunications, and transport) vulnerable to attacks.

Kenya has put forth enough technological advancements to facilitate growth in their country. However, this has also exposed them to the impending threat of cyberterrorism which has rapidly risen in the first half of the year, in incidences.

Based on the report, Twitter was the medium used by the perpetrators of the 2013 Westgate attack to keep tabs on police activities during the incident.

2013 cyber security statistics stated that there were over a million attempts to infiltrate businesses in the country. Around 500,000 had been actually detected by their system in the same year.

Also, incidents like obscenity, slanderous statements, and hate messages were found to be the fastest rising problem in Kenya’s social media landscape.

Reacting to this recent data on internet security threats, Jon Stevenson of Net7 Tech Network Security Switch reiterated the need for multiple layers of security in personal and office computers, adding that several tricky things can happen when the network is on 24/7.

The 2014 report also points out that many internet companies who provide internet solutions don’t really provide strong internet and data security along with their software. This caused the largest number of IP attack incidents in the past year.

“For convenience sake, some users prefer to just leave their computers connected to the network, without realizing its risk to their units. Our network security switch just takes one push on a button, so there’s really no excuse not to turn off that switch, anymore.” Jon said.

The Net7 Network Security Switch is a simple device that delivers tremendous protection to computers. It makes switching the network off easier, which leaves users with lesser excuses not do it. The switch also works for both PC and Mac, which means that every computer in the house can be individually protected.
