Follow on Google News | CleftClips Productions Presents the Four-Year Anniversary of The Super Serious ShowThe Super Serious Show is the premier and longest running live comedy mash-up in Los Angeles.
By: C.E.B. Publicity The Super Serious Show takes place every third Wednesday of the month at The Virgil. Kicking off at 7 p.m. with a happy hour that includes drink specials, a DJ, a food truck and sweets, Super Serious comedy begins at 8 p.m. with a new lineup of stand-up, sketch, music and videos each month. Unlike most comedy shows, every Super Serious evening is led by a host/headliner: Executive Producers of CleftClips and creators of The Super Serious Show, Mandee Johnson and Joel Mandelkorn, are excited to see the show enter its fifth year and to have some of their favorite performers on the anniversary lineup. “We started the show out of a DIY spirit and a dislike for comedy clubs, and we’ve managed to keep that energy throughout the past four years,” says Johnson. Unlike most clubs, Johnson and Mandelkorn pride themselves on creating an affordable experience for audiences, while simultaneously valuing their performers. “We built a show that includes everything we wanted at a show,” says Johnson. “We had to have food, so we made sure there would be a food truck. We wanted sweets, so we put sweets on the tables. DJ R-Rated sets the mood with great music, and we made sure there were drink specials.” CleftClips’ love for what they do is palpable. “There would be no point in doing this if we didn’t love it,” says Mandelkorn. Johnson, who documents every single Super Serious performer with one of her characteristic Polaroid portraits, describes each night of comedy like a work of art in itself. “There is a beauty to creating an event,” she says, “we start with nothing and build to something. It is tangible. You are there, and you are part of the energy. Then it’s over, and it is all gone.” Although Johnson and Mandelkorn admit that their own comedy tastes skew “indie, alternative, and definitely weird,” they genuinely appreciate all styles of comedy and work hard to infuse each lineup with a wide variety. “Our weird, indirect goal,” says Johnson, “is to bring more versions of comedy to more people. We want them to leave saying ‘that was cool, it made me think about new stuff.’” About the Super Serious Show: The four-year anniversary of The Super Serious Show is July 16, 2014 at The Virgil, 4519 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90029.
