ATLANTA - June 20, 2014 - PRLog -- The Buckhead Young Republicans passed two resolutions at their June Chapter Meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. The meeting was held at Gordon Biersch in Buckhead. Michael Graham of Atlanta’s 106.7 WYAY-FM Radio was the featured speaker, presenting on a variety of topics of concern for YRs at the local, state and national level. Also in attendance and presenting was Bob Barr, candidate for U.S. Congress, and Leo Smith of the Georgia Republican Party.

The two resolutions passed centered around taxation. The first resolution was also passed by the Georgia Young Republicans on June 14, 2014 at their State Convention in Savannah and showed support for SR 415 sponsored by President Pro Tempore David Shafer, which would cap the state income tax at 6%. The second resolution centered on a local vote of the Fulton County Commission to enact at 17% property tax increase.

Resolution 1 (Support of SR 415):

WHEREAS, YRs believe in smart taxation and responsible use of tax dollars;

WHEREAS, YRs seek to keep Georgia economically competitive to maintain current residents and encourage future residents;

BE RESOLVED THAT the Buckhead Young Republicans supports SR 415. An amendment to the Georgia Constitution to prohibit raising the rate of state income taxes currently in effect.

Resolution 2 (Request for Fulton County Commission to not raise property taxes by 17%):

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia passed a law prohibiting Fulton County from raising property taxes;

WHEREAS, raising taxes in an economy struggling to recover inhibits economic growth;

WHEREAS, higher property taxes make home ownership less affordable;

BE RESOLVED THAT the Buckhead Young Republicans ask the Fulton County Commission to obey current State law which prohibits the Commission from raising property taxes.

Keith Hanks, Vice Chairman of BYR, comments, “The Buckhead Young Republicans are excited to continue building a framework to pass meaningful resolutions on issues important to YRs in metro Atlanta.” He continues, “A strategic goal of BYR is to help participate in a dialogue among local and state party leaders that highlights interests and concerns of local young republicans.”
