BUEA, Cameroon - June 19, 2014 - PRLog -- Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University today announced that Mr. David Stephen, a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree (Cum Laude) has been offered the opportunity to conduct anti-malaria research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in the United States. The versatile Mr. Stephen, who came to SMU as a degree completion student from Nigeria, was the Valedictorian of the Class of 2014.

The objective of the research work that is taking Mr. Stephen to the United States this summer is “the weakening of mosquito wings” he says. He argues that many of the current solutions haven’t put an end on the malaria problem and so it’s time to try innovative solutions such as his. “The wings-weakening thinking is an important first step,” says Mr. Stephen. While at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he will work under the supervision of Prof. Ephantus Juma Muturi, who has secured partial funding for this innovative research project.

“We are very proud of the achievements of many of our students and graduates,” said Professor Januarius Jingwa (JJ) Asongu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SMU. “Mr. Stephen exemplifies what we expect from our students – versatility, integrity, industriousness, creativity, global citizenship, and entrepreneurship. As a liberal arts institution, which provides programs at the intersection of the arts, science and technology, we want to prepare graduates who can develop solutions for society’s myriad problems.”

Mr. David Stephen, who is an orphan, came to SMU as an international student having completed the National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology and the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Physics and Electronics from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Nigeria. SMU accepted 90 transfer credits from his previous education and he was able to complete his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering within a year. Due to his outstanding performance, he was selected to deliver the valedictory speech during the 2014 Spring Commencement which held on May 3, 2014, where he dazzled the crowd with his ideas. He has also been offered admission and scholarship to study for a Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering with a concentration in Computer Security and Intelligent Systems at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Campus of International Excellence (CIE) in Southern Catalonia, Spain. This is a leading European university.

“I am very pleased with the opportunities that Saint Monica University has offered me,” said Mr. David Stephen, who is currently still at SMU putting final touches on his various research proposals. “I had many options where I could continue my studies, but when I read about SMU’s mission and vision, I decided that I had to be part of such a great institution. Though quite young, SMU is poised to be a leading global university. The attention and opportunity given to their students are simply amazing and unparalleled.”
