June 19, 2014 - PRLog -- One of the most popular foods the UK people consume today is that of the almighty sandwich. Whether it’s been made at home, bought from a shop or made in front of you the love for the sandwich continues to grow.

Ever since the first sandwich was invented in the UK by the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762 it has grown in size, taste and complexity. A staggering 4.2 sandwiches a week are on average consumed per person per week at home.

But why do we love sandwiches so much? Just like the Mexicans we love food that can be handheld, are portable and which make little mess. Unlike the Burritos and Tacos of the world a sandwich does have to have 2 slices of bread wrapped around at least one filling to be able to call it a sandwich, this was confirmed by a court in the US a few years ago.

It is also estimated that there are over 20 million possible sandwich combinations and the longest recorded sandwich measured over 730m that’s enough to feed a few people for a while!

Research carried out by a lunch delivery Exeter company said that requests for different sandwich fillings had grown, but the traditional ingredients of cheese, ham, egg, salmon, bacon, tuna are requested but with a variety of interesting additions.
