LAS VEGAS - June 18, 2014 - PRLog -- Clark County Medical Society (CCMS) announces the 2014 recipients of its Winged Heart Award and the Student Rising Star Award. Local nurse, Janet Maran and Cure 4 the Kids, a local nonprofit, are the 2014 Winged Heart Award recipients. This year’s recipients of the Student Rising Star Award are Ori DeVera from Touro University and Elizabeth Telles-Richardson from University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Recipients were honored at the 60th Annual President’s Installation & Awards Ceremony on June 14, 2014 at the Red Rock Station Casino & Resort. The President’s Committee comprised of Dr. Keith Brill, CCMS’ 2013-14 president; Dr. George Alexander, past president; and Dr. Michael Edwards, president-elect, reviewed all nominations and selected finalist and winners.

Janet Maran, this year’s winner in the nursing category, is a dedicated volunteer at Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. Maran serves her neighbors by providing free medical services for those who can’t afford health insurance and quality health care in Southern Nevada.  There were two finalists that include Krystal Coffman, Spring Valley Hospital’s nurse practitioner for Neurology, and Angela De Tie,a local midwife.

Cure 4 the Kids Foundation, this year’s winner in the non-profit category, is a foundation whose mission is to bring specialized treatment to all of Nevada’s children, including those without medical insurance or without the ability to pay for treatment.  The two finalists in the category are The Children’s Free Clinic of Southern Nevada, a clinic that delivers health care to underprivileged children and provides access to care for adult family members, and Adam’s Place, an organization that helps young people and families work through their grief by taking part in support groups that rely solely on peers and volunteer facilitators for success.

“Nurses and nonprofits go above and beyond in our community and have helped to raise the bar of health care in Southern Nevada. It’s important to honor some of our community’s heroes in health care as well as tomorrow’s leaders,” said Dr. Alexander, CCMS’ past president and creator of the 2014 Winged Heart Award.
