By: Gulf Breeze Zoo June 13, 2014 Celebration of World Giraffe Day on the Longest Day of the Year Join us in celebrating World Giraffe Day at the Gulf Breeze Zoo! Gulf Breeze, FL – June 13th – This June, the Gulf Breeze Zoo along with zoos, schools, and conservation organizations all over the world are celebrating the very first World Giraffe Day.Make your way to the Gulf Breeze Zoo to be part of a worldwide event on June 21st. Join us for a special Meet-A-Keeper giraffe talk at 12pm and watch as our baby giraffe, Gamba, gets bottle fed. Meet the entire giraffe family for an opportunity to learn and ask questions about these beautiful animals. Guests are encouraged to join the party in the Giraffeteria Restaurant from 11am - 5pm. We will be giving away World Giraffe Day coloring & activity sheets for all ages. Why Giraffes? These beloved creatures are one of the best recognized, but least researched large animals in Africa. Only 4,700 reticulated giraffe still exist in the wild, a drastic reduction from the 28,000 that thrived in 1998. These numbers continue to decrease every year. The number of giraffe as a whole species have plummeted down over 40% just since the late 1990s, and they are already extinct in seven African countries.
