Follow on Google News | Amended Canada Food and Drug Regulations on Halal Food LabelingOn 23 April 2014 the Government of Canada amended the Food and Drug Regulations for food products labeled with Halal claims.
This change requires that all Halal claims on food labels, packaging or in advertisements include the name of the certifying body. Effective from 4 April 2016, it will be prohibited to use the word Halal, any letters of the Arabic alphabet or any representation such as a symbol, mark, etc. that creates the impression that the food is Halal unless the name of the person or body that certified the food is indicated on the food label, packaging or product advertisements. This will apply to both imported and domestic products. This will provide consistency for the industry and help prevent mislabeling practices.
