Where’s My Sanity? Stories That Help

BROOKLINE, Mass. - June 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Where’s my sanity?
This is not a question one often hears at a psychoanalytic institute.  But this title of a seminar and book by Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis graduate, Dr. Claudia Sheftel Luiz (http://www.claudialuiz.com/), that attracted 58 people on a lovely spring Saturday afternoon recently in May.  And according to the feedback, people were most certainly glad they came.

Dr. Luiz has a knack for storytelling and for weaving theory, humor, compassion and solid clinical experience into her many vignettes in the seminar and in her book (http://www.claudialuiz.com/book.html), which bring life to these composites of clinical work.  As Peter Kramer, the author of Listening to Prozac wrote of her:  “Claudia Luiz clears up common misconceptions behind the common clichés of psychotherapy.” And she’s fun to watch too, as Rosalia, one of the characters in her book says, “You look like Halle Berry.”

Create Emotional Experiences

The importance of seeking emotional experiences instead of solutions and advice is the foundation of Dr. Luiz’s message. She described three emotional experiences that create deep and lasting change, starting simply with “being heard,” about being deeply attuned to the other.  Describing how her training taught her how to search for and create these emotional experiences, Dr. Luiz emphasized that creating emotional experiences is not something only modern psychoanalysts can do, but something that can be learned by therapists, parents, spouses, and anyone interested in having a better life.

The audience responded with vignettes of their own from their personal lives or work with clients and patients in a multitude of clinical settings, demonstrating a resonance to the power of this message.  As one person stated: “The best part of the presentations was the give and take, questions and answers and the communal contribution of the participants.”
