Let’s understand how feathers have the quality to be used as an essential part of a product or décor piece.

Feathers are strong and yet flexible and this is why it is used as a raw material as well as by-product in many craft or décor projects. Feathers are made of a shaft known as rachis and vanes on either side. Vanes are prepared of barbs which are arranged side by side up the shaft of the feather. Barbules cultivate from barbs, which has tiny hooks that are interconnected. The short bare at the base of the shaft is known as calamus. If viewed crossways, calamus is basically hollow. Each is these specifications or feather structures are used for particular projects.

Feathers are thermoregulation that means they have the quality to acquire and keep warm and cool temperatures. This means they can be used as a dress material for winters and summers both.

There are mainly seven types of feathers:

1. Contour feathers: small feathers that cover the body, wings, and tail.

2. Flight feathers: feathers used in flight

a. Remiges: large wing feathers

b. Retrices: large tail feathers

(Not all long feathers of a bird are retrices. These are contour feathers that grow out of proportion on a bird and are mainly for display.)

3. Down feathers: soft under-feathers that provide insulation for warmth for a bird.

4. Semi-plumes: feathers used to create shape for the bird and provide some warmth.

5. Bristles: feathers used as a touch sensor or funnel that make the bird reflexively snap up food.

6. Filoplumes: specialized kind of bristle feathers that act as sensory organs, keeping other feathers in place and adjusting them for flight and insulation.

7. Eyelashes: these feathers are similar to human eyelashes.

Most birds have an annual moulting session, which is when the bird drops old feathers and grows in new ones. Feather Treasures collect these exclusive quills and supply it online to all the big brands, major designers and decorators worldwide.
