The 14-stop tour, powered by OnCell-TourSphere technology, recounts the stages of the battle through detailed audio interpetation and historical imagery. It also provides an alternative to traditional guided tours by allowing vistiors to easily explore the grounds at their own pace with their mobile devices.
“Since the battlefield is under modern development, the goal of the tour is to give visitors a sense of an experience that doesn’t exist”, says Aaron Marcavitch, Executive Director of Maryland Milestones and ATHA. “The neighborhood still had the ‘historic road’ and we used that, combined with stopping points at parks, to create a route.” The history was then filled in from the books, including Through the Perilous Fight by Steve Vogel.
The app complements the extended set of summer programs that will commemorate Prince George’s County and Maryland’s role in the War of 1812. The app was funded in part by the State Highway Administration through the National Parks Service. ATHA has also installed new interpetive signs in the area to educate visitors of the battle.
Visitors will be able to access the mobile tour by dialing the OnCell tour number found on stickers in the surrounding area, or by streaming the content on the OnCell mobile web app at www.oncell.mobi.
