KTM Roofing Announces Recycling Partnership with Shingletex

ATLANTA - June 10, 2014 - PRLog -- KTM Roofing, which since its founding in 1984 has provided a full scope of roofing services to residential and commercial customers in the Atlanta area, has announced a new recycling partnership with Shingletex with a commitment to recycle at least 5 tons of discarded roofing material every week. The end result of the recycling program is minimize the dumping of roofing materials into landfills by turning these waste products into materials that can be used for other purposes, such as asphalt paving.

Shingletex, which is based in Conley Georgia, is part of a small but growing group of organizations that work with roofing companies and contractors to find recycling alternatives for waste materials, rather than sending them straight to landfills that are struggling with the overwhelming amounts of trash and waste that arrive on a daily basis. Shingletex works by collecting old roofing materials on a regular basis from ongoing project sites, which are then transported to its sorting plant in Conley, Georgia.

Upon arrival, the roofing materials go through a process where recyclable elements such as paper, wood and metal are separated out from the roofing materials to be purposed for other applicable uses. The remaining roofing materials, which typically have high amounts of residual asphalt, are then ground into a substance with a texture similar to sand to be used as one of the components of asphalt paving referred to as “hot mix”.

The challenge for Shingletex and its members is the burgeoning growth of construction and roofing materials that are dumped in landfills, which is virtually impossible to recycle once the discarded materials are mixed in with non-construction related refuse. According to the EPA, approximately 136 million tons of construction and demolition materials are dumped in landfills, of which an estimated 13 million tons is directly related to roofing materials. The commitment of KTM Roofing, Shingletex, and the rest of its members is to reverse this trend with the dual objective of creating a sustainable as well as a zero-waste future.

“Our partnership with Shingletex speaks to our commitment to developing solutions for the responsible and productive use of construction, roofing, and demolition materials,” said Tim McLoughlin, President and Founder of KTM Roofing. He added, “The problem can only be solved by everyone getting on board and agreeing there are more productive ways to deal with this type of waste, and the process used by Shingletex provides a solid solution.”

KTM Roofing, with over 30 years of service in Atlanta and its surrounding areas, provides roofing solutions ranging from the preservation of historic homes to complex commercial projects including the Arthur Blank Family Foundation building, the Alpharetta Community Bank, and the Stone Mountain Memorial Hall.
