ATLANTA FREE SPEECH JUNETEENTH EDUCATIONAL DISCUSSION: EXAMINING MODERN-DAY RACIAL DISPARITIES

Atlanta-
June 2014, Atlanta Free Speech, in collaboration with The Auburn Avenue Research Library, will host a discussion in recognition of Juneteenth titled, The Illusion of Freedom: The Reality of Black Life in America since the Emancipation Proclamation on Saturday, June 14 at 3:00 p.m.  This discussion will explore various modern-day racial disparities facing the African-American community at large. These disparities include financial stability, education, incarceration, voting rights, and the impact of capitalism.

In the Juneteenth tradition of celebrating freedom, encouraging self-improvement, as well as honoring African American history and culture, Atlanta Free Speech is spearheading the community discussion to promote open dialogue on issues that affect the urban community and strategies to combat the unjust disparities. Tiana L. Ferrell, Publisher of Atlanta Free Speech and descendant of NAACP co-founder Ida B. Wells and Alicia Fontnette, Professor and Chief Editor of Atlanta Free Speech, will lead the discussion.  Guest speakers will include: Christy Garrison-Harrison, Professor at Clark Atlanta University, Rashad Richey, WAOK 1380 personality and Josiah Pamoja, Ph.D., Professor of History and African-American Studies.

Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation that dates back to Galveston, Texas in 1865.  It commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States when Major General Gordon Granger delivered the General Order Number 3 enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation had become official 2 years earlier and ordered all enslaved people to be free.
