June 14 - Walkable Communities & Nature (Huntington Village)

The Quality Parks Master Naturalist program offers a flexible and rewarding way to - - Be Naturally Intelligent™

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. - June 11, 2014 - PRLog -- To start the day, we will enter the walkable communities of Huntington Village.

According to the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10000872396390444464304577535811697909728), "the quaint and bustling village has a strong arts flavor, with galleries, an independent bookstore, a popular new concert venue and a movie theater specializing in independent and international films."

"Its large and varied stock of restaurants, night life and outdoor concerts and festivals attract people from across Long Island, and its compact size makes it pedestrian-friendly for visitors and residents alike."

What better place to offer the teachings of a Long Island Naturalist & Artist.

Ján Porinchak,  will be teaching the art of nature journaling. His style is exquisite and this manner engaging, as he makes it easy for you too to put pen to paper and create your own artistry. He has offered several sessions with us, and each time all students walk away pleased.

Session Description

S-I: Long Island Explorer

This will be an overview of the Long Island natural areas and their natural history. From learning how to identify common plants, to understanding the jurisdictional responsibilities of Parks (federal, state, county, town), you will begin to piece together a broad regional view of natural areas in your community. We will apply nature journal writing as a form of self-expression and as your means to record your studies of native plants, wildlife, and their habits, along with with your observations of key indicators of a healthy natural area.

Also Hike and journal at Target Rock - - "Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge (http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Target_Rock/) is truly a haven for wildlife. Its diverse habitats of mature oak-hickory forest, wetlands and bay beach give food, shelter, water and space to many of Long Island's wildlife species [including] piping plover, a federally threatened...species." - USFWS brochure.

Visit Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve as a contrast to Target Rock and as an example of different park jurisdictions. - - "Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve (http://nysparks.com/parks/23/details.aspx), situated on a scenic peninsula extending into Long Island Sound, offers miles of bridle paths, walking, jogging, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and nature trails over acres of woodland, meadows, rock shoreline and salt marsh."

POSTSCRIPT

Written By Mindy, Inspired By Ray

It's our second year of offering the Quality Parks Master Naturalist program, thanks to all efforts. And while Ray had a trail center named after him, I sent students out to serve as volunteers to help out our many Cooperators (http://www.qualityparks.org/about-us/Cooperators). I also hired local naturalists, Instructors (http://www.qualityparks.org/about-us#TOC-Instructors), in a train-the-trainer atmosphere.

For this upcoming session, Chris Duffner (http://www.qualityparks.org/about-us#TOC-Chris-Duffner) first suggested that this hub be called the County Line Hub, and realized that it was time to venture West, that is, to western Long Island. You will be as surprised as me, to find that going West is just as rewarding an adventure too as going to the East End.

Now my task is to generate an Annual Report, and for those who knew Ray, it was a task he anguished about.  Plese register for or support this event with a  Scholarship Fund and Seat Donation Ticket, or become a Supporting Member (http://www.qualityparks.org/Membership-Benefits) for this year.
