Children’s Charity Welcomes Action to Combat Anti-Biotic Resistant Infections

STOCKPORT, U.K. - June 10, 2014 - PRLog -- An urgent call from a group of Britain’s most eminent medical experts to create a global body to tackle the looming threat to humanity from anti-biotic resistant infections has been welcomed by children’s charity Action for Sick Children.

Speaking at the Royal Society in London, Dr Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust, warned that the world is facing an apocalyptic scenario in which people will die from routine infections because effective drugs have run out.

Dr Farrar is one of a growing number of experts to express their concerns. The group, which also includes Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies, is convinced the threat from drug resistant infections is worse than that of climate change.

They warn that in a future without antibiotics, surgery would become deadly and treatments for conditions including cancer, diabetes and organ failure would be impossible in their current form.

“I don’t want to see my children, their children or even myself in hospital with an un-treatable infection, said Dame Sally. I have pointed out to the government, would they want to be on watch when the health service falls over because they didn’t take action early enough?”

Experts point out that there are already 5,000 deaths in England each year owing to antibiotic-resistant strains of infections and resistance is continuing to emerge in a wide spectrum of diseases.

A spokesperson for Action for Sick Children, speaking from the charity’s Cheshire HQ said: “Every parent  will be concerned about the prospect of anti-biotic resistant infections. We have all come to rely on the accessibility and effectiveness of anti-biotics in helping our children through a variety of childhood illnesses.

“However, it is good to see that we have this group of eminent medical experts who are on guard and are prepared to warn the authorities of what may be in store for us in the near future.

“Action for Sick Children will, of course support their work and would welcome any move that will help ultimately protect the health of young children.”
