California Youth Pastor Charged with Open Murder of Man Outside Bar/Restaurant in Las Vegas

Self defense or some type of negligent manslaughter or homicide?

LAS VEGAS - June 7, 2014 - PRLog -- A youth pastor at The Place of Refuge Church in Manteca, California was arrested on a Las Vegas warrant in California and held awaiting possible extradition back to Clark County Nevada.  Robert L. Cox is accused of Open Murder (generalized murder charge before the prosecution formally decides what type of murder charge he'll face) of Link Ellingson outside of the Four Keggs in Las Vegas around midnight June 13, 2013.  About six months after, the altercation, Ellingson passed away at a Las Vegas hospital (December of 2013).  Nearly six months later, here we are.  The State of Nevada found probable cause in May of this year and filed charges and subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Cox.  He was arrested in the Manteca area last week without incident.

There is no apparant criminal history on Cox, and this friends, church members, and family are astonished that it has come to this.  Witnesses in his group are adamant that this is an easy case of "self defense."  The Clark County Coroner declared Ellingson's death a homicide due to internal abdominal bleeding and blunt head trauma due to assault.  No doubt, that had a lot to due with the prosecution filing formal charges against Cox.  Multiple witnesses, mostly in the defendant's party state that Ellingson became aggressive and assaulted multiple people including Cox before the defendant grabbed Ellingson before he fell to the gound, hitting his head.  Video allegedly does confirm Ellingson abruptly walking toward Cox's group and then later falling to the ground alone.

Cox posted $100,000 cash bond late this past week and has avoided extradition from California.  No word on an official preliminary hearing in the Las Vegas Justice Court, but a warrant return hearing is scheduled for June 13th, exactly one year after the incident.
