Follow on Google News | M.O.M. March Against Eating Disorders - September 30, 2014 in Washington, D.CMoms, Families, and Advocates Unite in the Fight Against Eating Disorders Three eating disorder non-profits are organizing a 'march' on Washington D.C. to raise awareness about eating disorders.
By: The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness The mission of the M.O.M. March is to unite people from around the country to advocate for those affected by eating disorders and unify their voices to educate Congress and influence federal policy related to eating disorders. Participants in the M.O.M. March hope to raise awareness of the prevalence, stigma and devastating consequences of eating disorders and honor those who have lost a loved one to an eating disorder. Eating disorders are the deadliest of all mental illnesses, yet access to treatment is gravely inadequate and people continue to suffer and die unnecessarily as a result. It is estimated that nearly 11 million men, women, and children suffer from anorexia and bulimia as early as age 5, and 20 million more from binge eating disorder. In addition, 10% of eating disorder cases are children under the age of 10. Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Without treatment, up to 20% of people with serious eating disorders die. With treatment, that number falls to 2-3%. * The M.O.M. March culminates on October 1, 2014, in a day of advocacy on Capitol Hill with the EDC'S National Lobby Day and Congressional Briefing, dedicated to moms of people suffering eating disorders.
