Follow on Google News | Lejog End to End Charity Cycle Challenge For Downs In DorsetOn the 7th June 2014 five cyclists embark on a 9 day ride from Lands End to John 0'Groats to raise awareness for 'Downs In Dorset'.
By: Downs In Dorset The ride is supporting the aims of the group 'Downs In Dorset' which currently provides a support network for families with Down's Syndrome children between 0-5 years. The money raised will enable this group to register for official charity status so that it can expand its current support network and provide early preventative care for children with Down's Syndrome. Key organizer of the charity ride Richard Middleditch comments "What started as a 50 years olds indulgence has now turned into a worthwhile cause. I was looking for a cause to support with the ride when an employee explained to me the battle his family were going through with their baby daughter." Early preventative care such as physiotherapy and speech therapy which can assist in the development of children with Down's syndrome is not universally offered by NHS trusts in the United Kingdom. This unfortunate situation leaves the specific program of preventative care determined by the post code lottery. Richard goes on to say "By backing this cause we aim to raise enough money to enable the Downs In Dorset group to register for charitable status. This will allow them to plug the current gap in preventative care so that they can provide ongoing support and funding to families finding themselves in this position." The 9 day cycle ride scheduled from 9th-16th June is to be completed by 5 riders and has an initial fundraising target of £5,000. This will provide Downs In Dorset with sufficient funds to registering as a charity and subsequently enable it to widen and develop its current level of support. As well as collecting donations along the way an online donation page has been set up (https://fundrazr.com/ The Lands’ End to John o’Groats (Lejog) is an iconic bike ride that represents the fullest traverse of the entire length of the British Isles. The end to end physical challenge from the two furthest most points of mainland Britain will cover nearly 1000 miles over 9 days by which time the riders will hope to have succeeded in meeting their fundraising target.
