Historical Segway Tour of Ybor City
- Jun. 10, 2014 - TAMPA, Fla. --
Electric Glide Tours, a Segway tour company located in Ybor City, Florida today announced that it has received the 2014 TripAdvisor®
Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor. Establishments awarded the Certificate of Excellence are located all over the world and represent the upper echelon of businesses listed on the website.
After nearly two years in operation and more than a thousand tours, Electric Glide Tours, a.k.a. "EGT" knows what it takes to make a Segway tour company stand out. It all starts with the technology, but it doesn't end there.
The technical and corporate-mandated title for the two-wheeled/
self-balancing, emission-free machine is called the "Segway PT." The "PT" stands for "Personal Transporter."
The media and general public know them as a "Segway," and contrary to popular belief, a Segway is actually quite safe, provided the rider receives the appropriate level of training. Safety training is where EGT feels it really shines. Safe tours have a direct correlation to positive reviews and in this case, postive reviews lead to awards. "Extensive safety training is the key and this training needs to be modified based on the terrain and conditions of each tour," says Kristy Hess, CEO/President of EGT. "A Segway is no less safe than a bicycle after the appropriate training. We're very patient with all our guests and we make sure that each and every person is fully trained and comfortable before embarking on Segway tour and this, we believe, is why people love us so much. Ybor City is a challenging backdrop on which to ride a Segway, but our training is geo-specific. Some Segway tour companies have 15 or 20-foot wide sidewalks on which to glide. Since Ybor City is the historic district of Tampa, the safety training is adjusted for this environment where the sidewalks are not as wide and the terrain is more challenging."
After the training, guests are led in a single file line to a community park or common area in the vicinity so they can test their new skills and become more acclimated to the machine. After a few minutes, the machines are switched from training mode to riding mode. Kristy's husband Russell, co-owner and VP had this to say: "Training people properly is the most important aspect of our business. Improper training is why people might be apprehensive about taking a Segway tour, and partly if they've read anything negative about the alleged safety aspects of a Segway PT. We're not only trying to train people better, but we also hope to dispel the rumors often times associated with the Segway PT. Our feeling at EGT is that if everyone is appropriately trained and comfortable before we leave the training area, they will enjoy the tour much more because they are no longer worried about how to ride the Segway. Winning this award not only gives us a great deal of pride, but it is this kind of feedback from our tour guests that indicates we're doing things right and dispelling those myths and negative stereotypes."
To further safety aspects, along the tour, guests are alerted of potentially hazardous areas by communicating with them with wireless radio devices which accompany each guest throughout the experience.
“TripAdvisor is pleased to honor exceptional hospitality businesses for consistent excellence,”
said Marc Charron, President of TripAdvisor for Business. “The Certificate of Excellence award gives top performing establishments around the world the recognition they deserve, based on feedback from those who matter most – their customers. From Australia to Zimbabwe, we want to applaud exceptional hospitality businesses for offering TripAdvisor travelers a great customer experience.”About Electric Glide Tours
