FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - June 2, 2014 - PRLog -- So what does it mean to be “Board Certified?”

Being board certified means that the attorney is a legal expert, who has dedicated himself to professional excellence.  According to the Florida Bar, attaining board certification is the highest level of achievement an attorney can receive in any particular area of law.  Board certification recognizes the attorneys as being specialists who demonstrate a high level of professionalism and ethics in the way they run their practice.

Attorney Luis Alberto Guerra exclusively practices immigration law and he is proud to be one of the few board certified attorneys in the area of immigration and nationality law. To put this into perspective, there are currently around 95,000 practicing attorneys in the state of Florida, but actually less than 1% of them are actually board certified in their particular field of law.  Now, out of the 4,559 board certified attorneys in the state of Florida, only 69 are board certified experts in immigration & nationality law.

How does the Board Certification process actually work?

Not many people really understand what board certification entails, but it is actually a very arduous process. The requirements for board certification in immigration and nationality include a minimum of five years devoted to the full-time practice of law; of those five years of practice at least 40% must have been exclusively in the field of immigration and nationality law; a completion of at least 50 hours of approved continuous legal education credits in the three years prior to applying for board certification; an exhaustive and detailed peer review of character, ethics, and reputation in the field; and the passing of a rigorous written six-hour written examination.

A unique life experience of continuous achievements

After much dedication, perseverance, and hard work Attorney Luis Alberto Guerra is now able to call himself an expert in the field of immigration and nationality law. His journey up until this point has not been an easy one. He himself is an immigrant who shares a story similar to that of his many clients.  He had the same dreams his clients now have and is a role model to the immigrant community in the U.S.  Attorney Guerra first traveled from Peru to the U.S. , as a visitor, at the age of 15 and he instantly became attached to this country. Rather than leaving when his visa expired he decided to stay despite his family’s efforts to bring him home.

To convince his parents to allow him to stay in the U.S., Attorney Guerra made a promise to them: that if he stayed he would pursue an education. This was a difficult task, however, considering that he didn’t speak any English.  Attorney Guerra had to take low-paying jobs to make money and survive. He also had to fight tooth and nail to obtain his green card. There was a point in time where he was almost deported back home, but eventually he was able to attain his full U.S. citizenship.

Even though the promise he made to his family was a challenge to fulfill, Attorney Guerra was able to uphold it.  He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree, in Political Science, from Florida Atlantic University in FL, and graduated at the top of his law school class from Nova Southeastern University, in FL.   Now, as an expert and leader in the immigration & nationality arena, Attorney Guerra helps others fulfill their American dreams to stay, live and succeed in the U.S.
