Yorkshire’s Olympic Stars Entice Hundreds into The Snow to Support Deafblind Charity ‘Sense’

By: Snozone

CASTLEFORD, U.K. - June 2, 2014 - PRLog -- Hundreds of skiers and boarders flocked indoors this weekend to celebrate Snozone’s new partnership with Sense, the charity that supports and campaigns for deafblind people, at Snozone Castleford, within Xscape.

Paralympic Sitskier Jo Willoughby from Barnsley and Olympic Freeskier Katie Summerhayes from Sheffield were there to support the event and inspire visitors that winter sports can really be for everyone. Jo Willhoughby overcame a terrible childhood illness which left her paralysed from the chest down, to become the most successful female sitskier Great Britain has ever had, taking up the sport at the age of 28. 18-year-old Katie competed in this year’s Sochi Winter Olympics, coming seventh in the Ski Slopestyle.

Complimentary sledging and ice slide sessions were given to all families who are supported by Sense and Jo Willhoughby surprised many families by offering their children the chance to experience the thrill of mono-skiing from the top of the main slope with support from her coach Mike Smith.

Spectators were entertained in the Snobar with music from the Huddersfield Marching Band, complimentary face painting plus arts and crafts.

Zoe Fenner, General Manager of Snozone Castleford says: “Jo and Katie were fantastic sports, inspiring our stars of the future who were eager to meet the professsionals, and in return getting inspired themselves by the people behind Sense. Snozone shares the view that everybody should have access to winter sports and this event was held to promote our new alliance with Sense”.

The first Sense charity event was held at Snozone Milton Keynes on Saturday 17th May. Supporting the Bedfordshire event was 19-year-old freestyle skiier Rowan Cheshire and our British number 1 ski cross racer Emily Sarsfield. 25% of the proceeds from both events will be donated to Sense to help fund its important work, helping to change lives across the UK.
