VERO BEACH, Fla. - May 31, 2014 - PRLog -- A report was published on the website of the  US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health entitled, "Epidemiology of pediatric surgical admissions in US children: data from the HCUP kids inpatient database" which detailed the estimated annual frequencies of in-hospital surgical procedures performed on children in the United States using the 2003, 2006, and 2009 Kids' Inpatient Database (KID).

Used to determine rates of discharge and types of surgery the results were that over the 3 years evaluated, in the United States approximately 450,000 children under age 18 are admitted for surgery every year with 25% of these children being under age 3 for gastrointestinal, orthopedic, or urological surgery. The remaining children from age 4 to 18 are admitted for many other types of surgery including plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery and other cosmetic surgical procedures.

Dr William H. Frazier, FACS is a Yale-trained, experienced cosmetic surgeon who has been practicing in Vero Beach, Florida and the Treasure Coast for over 25 years. In a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, he recently addressed what types of surgery are age appropriate for each age group.

He opened the presentation with the following statement, "Hi I'm Dr. William Frazier, I'm a double boarded certified general and plastic and reconstructive surgeon. I'd like to talk a little bit about age and surgery because I'm often asked what's the best age for carrying out a particular kind of procedure. A few guidelines that I would put forward. First, from birth until two and a half years old patients don't remember anything so general anesthesia is necessary but you won't harm or scar their psyche. From age two and a half years old to age six they will remember and you need to be very cautious about elective surgery those years. Emergency surgery, appendicitis - absolutely but elective surgery should in general should be avoided."

He went on to say, "Starting at age six through twelve the children are able to understand and can agree but generally are not suited for local anesthesia so general anesthesia is still necessary. So you want to be sure that whatever it is that you are contemplating doing is worth the risk of general anesthesia - that is the risk benefit is in favor of the patient. So these are just some thoughts about age and criteria on deciding whether to or not to carry out surgery."
