EL CERRITO, Calif. - May 30, 2014 - PRLog -- Buddhism and America.  Buddhism and the American Dream.  Do they go together?

The commonly held American Dream has generally been the dream of getting a good job, making money, becoming successful, buying a home - in other words the opportunity to advance oneself in the worlds of career and financial success.

Buddhism, on the other hand, is commonly seen as a meditative religious practice allowing one to escape the challenges and rigors of daily existence, a method of retreat into a calmer, more peaceful, personal place.

But Buddhism - and especially as exemplified by the Buddhism of the SGI, or Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist lay organization with 12,000,000 members in 192 countries and territories around the world - is far more than a quiet meditative way of escaping the troubles of daily life.

It is, rather, a practical approach to solving life's problems, to overcoming one's problems and winning in life in the here and now, and its down-to-earth practicality has, more and more, taken its place as an extremely good fit with American life.

The books of James Hilgendorf range over an extremely broad array of subjects, but a common theme that keeps surfacing throughout all of his books is the common dream of Buddhism and America.

Buddhism and America.  Buddhism and the American Dream.  Buddhism and the Dream of America.

The ideals and dreams of Buddhism, claims Hilgendorf, are the very ideals and dreams that founded America.  Buddhism is the way now and in the future for bringing those high ideals down into concrete reality, of making them manifest in the lives of ordinary people, of providing a spiritual foundation for actually realizing the original Dream of America.

The titles of Hilgendorf's books give an idea of the braod range of ideas covered in his writings: "A New Myth for America"; "The New Superpower"; "Life & Death: A Buddhist Perspective"; "The Great New Emerging Civilization"; "The Buddha and the Dream of America"; "Forever Here"; "Handbook for Youth in a Muddied Age"; and "Poems of Death: Time for Eternity".

All of his books are now available in e-book format through Apple iBooks for use on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.  Books are available through the iBooks app, or by going to https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/james-hilgendorf/id380...
