Organization Formed To Position Women Lawyers To Serve On Boards Of Public Companies Selects Pepper Hamilton LLP Partner To Attend Institute
 
May 27, 2014 - PRLog -- PHILADELPHIA - Barbara Sicalides, leader of the antitrust and trade regulation practice and partner at the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP, attended the DirectWomen Board Institute from January 22-24 in New York City. DirectWomen, an organization formed to position women lawyers to serve on boards of public companies, selects a group of qualified women lawyers from a competitive pool of applicants across the country to participate in the three-day program.

At the DirectWomen Board Institute Sicalides attended informational sessions on key issues facing current and future corporate directors and had the opportunity to interact with Institute alumnae and past honorees. The Institute was co-chaired by Professor Hillary A. Sale, Walter D. Coles Professor of Law and Professor of Management at Washington University in St. Louis and Professor Lisa M. Fairfax, Leroy Sorenson Merrifield Research Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School. Institute faculty featured leading experts on corporate governance as well as experienced directors and officers of large public companies. Speakers covered topics such as the role and work of nominating board members, the evolving nature of shareholder relations, the strategic role of audit committees and the role of executive search firms in board searches.

For over 23 years Sicalides has been an antitrust counselor to business teams and fiduciary duty advisor to management and boards. She is an expert at understanding the goals of businesses and analyzing large amounts of complex information about the various products, businesses and markets in which those businesses participate. Sicalides has developed over one hundred successful strategic solutions to permit companies to achieve their lawful goals while minimizing legal risks. Internal investigations have been an important part of her litigation and non-litigation work. She has organized, managed and implemented internal investigations arising out of shareholder demands, questions raised by management, government inquiries and as part of compliance audits. In addition to Sicalides’s productive law practice she has extensive experience with philanthropic board service. Currently she serves as a director of Community Legal Services, Inc., Philadelphia Legal Assistance and the Committee of Seventy. Sicalides began her career managing a small business before receiving her legal training. She holds a B.A. From Barnard College and a J.D. from Temple University School of Law.
