NASHVILLE, Tenn. - May 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Before making one of the largest investments of your lifetime, be smart by keeping these points in mind when house shopping:

* Before entering the home, take a thorough look at the roof and pay particular attention to missing shingles, holes, sags, or anything that catches your attention.
*  Focus on structural items such as electrical, plumbing, and appliances because those things are harder and more expensive to change.
*  Do not be sidetracked by easily changeable items such as current decor, paint color, window treatments, and so on.
*  Inhale deeply and smell every room.  Sewage systems in older homes can sometimes get clogged or damaged by tree roots, causing unpleasant odors.
*  Touch everything!  Turn on every faucet and light switch, open every window and door, flush the toilets, even taste the water.  Know what does and does not work and what minor fixes will be needed.

Looking at potential homes can be exciting, but potential home buyers must be astute and not allow their enthusiasm to distract them from making uneducated or rash decisions.
