1. Manufacturing Technique:
Solid cedar siding is manufactured from a single piece of wood.Engineered cedar siding consists of four or more layers. The top layer is the Cedar veneer, which is a solid sawn 4mm (1/4") wood lamel. The bottom layers consist of plywood and these layers are bonded together under pressure using an exterior grade glue.
Solid cedar siding is a 100% natural product which may react negatively to air humidity variations. Cedar siding tries to stay at equilibrium with the moisture content of the surrounding air, causing swelling or shrinkage in the wood. In order to avoid seasonal deformities from becoming noticeable the ideal moisture content is about 12 % in most areas of North America. Engineered siding maintains its sturdy shape throughout seasonal changes and it is very durable to humidity fluctuations. Engineered siding is made by putting multiple layers of plywood backing that are cross laminated to stabilize the top layer of veneer. This method of manufacturing allows the engineered cedar siding to be less prone to swelling caused by moisture.
3. Price Point
Engineered cedar siding products are 25-30% more cost effective and therefore less expensive than solid cedar products of the equivalent grade.
There is virtually no difference in the appearance of solid siding in comparison with engineered siding. Engineered cedar siding provides the same look, feel, and experience as real solid cedar. Engineered siding uses a solid cedar veneer-which means the top layer is made of real wood and has the same texture and appearance as solid wood.
Solid siding should be installed on or above grade, using a nail down or staple down installation method. Engineered siding can be installed in a wide range of exteriors or interiors and is approximately 33% faster to install than solid Cedar. Depending on construction type, nail down or glue down methods of installation may be used.
6. Environmentally Friendly
The manufacturing process of bonding the wood materials together uses high quality non-toxic glue. The glue is made from a non-urea formaldehyde formula. This in turn allows engineered cedar to be just as environmentally friendly as solid cedar. Engineered products also promote sustainability of the old growth cedar. By using 4mm of real cedar veneer, it allows for the conservation of the cedar species up to eight times more than a solid Cedar product!
