May 21, 2014 - PRLog -- By raising over $70,000 to benefit the American Diabetes Association, a team of local Savannah area businesswomen and men have won the 2014 Kiss-a-Pig Campaign, which was sponsored by New River Auto Mall Luxury Group (http://www.newriverautomall.com/community-involvement/). The winning team, who chose the fun sorority or fraternity-type name of Phi Pigma Kappa, bested a tough field of competitors made up of community leaders from throughout southeast Georgia.

The winner was announced at the Gala Finale which took place on Saturday, May 10 at the Hyatt Regency. In keeping with the tradition of the fundraiser, the Phi Pigma Kappa’s team captain, Marianne Ganem Poppell, got to kiss a live pig, much to the delight of all in attendance. The pig is specially honored by ADA as the being the original source of insulin.

The Phi Pigma Kappa team, along with the five other teams competing in the annual regional campaign, raised over $270,000 to support the important work being done by the American Diabetes Association.

All of the teams that took part in this year’s campaign were made up of a wide variety of coastal Georgia professionals from Chatham, Bulloch, Effingham, and Liberty Counties.

Last year’s Kiss-a-Pig winner, the Savannah Boar Association, was named the first runner up by raising over $53,000; the team was led by Dave Smith. The second runner up, Hamland, whose team captain was Mimi Lovett Hayes, raised over $24,000.

The other teams that took part in the competition were Pig Dynasty, which represented Statesboro/Bulloch County, and 16-year veterans of the Kiss-a-Pig campaign, Liberty County Schools & Friends.

The Savannah Chatham-County Public School System took part in the fundraiser by conducting their own competition within the school system, which raised a total of $52,000. The winner of their competition was May Howard Elementary School, which gathered over $18,000.

The 22nd Annual Kiss-a-Pig Campaign is set to continue until the end of the year. Presenting sponsor New River Auto Mall Luxury Group encourages folks from throughout the coastal Georgia and Lowcountry region to show their support for this worthy cause.
