This annual event was designed to re-introduce residents of Ward 8 and beyond to organic fresh fruit & vegetable offerings. According to the DC Department of Health, only 32% of Ward 8 residents consume fresh fruits and vegetables, due to accessibility and cost. In order to meet the needs of our community and patrons, vendors of the W8FM accept WIC, SNAP & senior vouchers. THEARC is located on four different public transportation bus routes and are near two major rail stations. This year, the goal is to introduce a regular calendar of activities throughout the summer and fall months which will not only provide free, healthful activities for youth & adults, but entice new customers. In addition to the market offerings, community members will have access to free yoga, cooking demonstrations, youth art activities and performances at the W8FM from June 7 - until the close of the market in the Fall.
Newly implemented regulations could seriously affect smaller markets such as the W8FM. Updated vending requirements could make it difficult for many market vendors to participate in the W8FM this year due to permitting issues or fees associated with licensing. It is the hope of both THEARC and W8FM that the new wellness programing will be an added draw to the community-based, nonprofit farmers' market cooperative.
