Perhaps the easiest route for any business owner to take is to “follow the leader” – do what others are doing and hope to have at least the same – if not more – success. Following the leader is also the easiest route to losing your individuality.

Many years ago, as a member of a marching band, I learned intricate maneuvers to perform on the football field. I knew who was on my right, who was on my left and all around me but I also knew that I had to continue to look ahead, staying focused on my own movements – not unlike the business owner who must maintain his company’s individuality while keeping the competition in his peripheral vision.

What makes your business stand out? What can you offer customers that others cannot? What is your underlying purpose? Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make you stand out from your competitors – a unique service you provide, a price that can’t be beat or that extra customer service step you take to make your customers feel truly special.

With that purpose always in the forefront of your thinking, you can then determine the best marketing approach/approaches to get that message to your potential customers, make your business stand out and position yourself above the rest.

Marketing is a balancing act, with many options available to you. In addition to the marketing tools the Internet has now made available (social media, SEO, YouTube videos, Facebook and more new possibilities that continue to be introduced almost daily), there are still more “traditional” options out there, such as radio or TV advertisements, event sponsorships, magazine and newspaper ads.

Even with a balance of marketing approaches, the key is to never lose sight of the most important fact – if you try to be all things to all people, you are sure to fail. Don’t lose sight of your goals, your strengths and your individuality.

You may find it necessary to tweak your mission or your plan to better position your business in the marketplace, but if you don’t lose sight of your original purpose – your foundation – you will have the power to control your business’s fate.
