Launch of Crowd Sourced Catalog of Open (Government) Data Portals

OpenGeoCode.org is pleased to announce the launch of our CrowdSourced Catalog of Open Government Data Portals.

VANCOUVER, Wash. - May 19, 2014 - PRLog -- In May 2013, the Obama Administration took further action by exeecutuve order to make information generated and stored by the Federal Government more open and accessible to innovators and the public.

OpenGeoCode.org  co-founder Andrew Ferlitsch stated that  “The move of the administration to fuel entrepreneurship while increasing government transparency and efficiency was a perfect opportunity for our team to create a data catalog to conveniently help developers worldwide  interact, use and add to this portal.”

The Executive Order stated that information is a valuable national asset whose value is multiplied when it is made easily accessible to the public and that, going forward, data generated by the government be made available in open, machine-readable formats, while appropriately safeguarding privacy, confidentiality, and security.  Will Mayall, co-founder of OpenGeoCode.org said that “the ability of our product to help developers will greatly increase the usage of such data and our platform allows for developers to also submit data portals that are not on the catalog list yet.”

The OpenGeoCode.org data catalog can be found at: http://www.opengeocode.org/opendata/ .  The catalog currently contains over 600 data portals for country, state, county and city level, as well as the UN and EU.   The catalog and developer tools created will make troves of previously inaccessible or unmanageable data easily available to entrepreneurs, researchers, and others who can use those files to generate new products and services, build businesses, and create jobs.  “We encourage developers to help us Crowd Source data portals and to actively grow our catalog.  Our team can also help with custom development and consulting for special use applications” said Karl Wischnofske, co-founder of OpenGeoCode.org.
