Photographing The First Dance - Wedding Photography

The first dance is a magical moment for a newly married couple. It is something that they have practised repeatedly prior to the big day, to ensure that every step is perfect.

CHICAGO - May 16, 2014 - PRLog -- Photographing the first dance can be a tricky part of the wedding photographer’s remit, as professional photographer Will Knight, of Will Knight Photography in Chicago, IL, explains:

“The first dance is such an exciting moment for the married couple. It often marks the point at which the formal part of the day concludes and they can start letting their hair down and simply enjoying the party with their guests.

“From the photographer’s point of view, the first dance needs to be carefully captured. Often the venue’s lighting will be dimmed or changed as the newlyweds take to the dance floor, so last minute adjustments need to be made to ensure that the quality of light is sufficient to enable the taking of perfect photographs. Creative lighting effects used by the venue need to be balanced with those used by the photograph, particularly given the need to avoid any motion blur.”

With the majority of the guests also looking to take their own snaps of the first dance, flashes from camera phones and guests getting into the shot can add to the tricky elements faced by the official photographer. However, as Knight explains, a true professional will take it all in his or her stride:

“We’ve learned over the years here at Will Knight Photography that there are a few tricks of the trade when it comes to capturing the first dance. Discussing it candidly with the bride and groom beforehand is of course an essential part of the service and this can help to ensure that the photographer is in the perfect position to capture the happy couple without any issues.”

Regardless of whether the couple has opted for an intimate, modern feel to their wedding photographs or a more formal, classic mood, the first dance will form one of the key memories of their day and must be captured accordingly.

The first dance is a joyful part of the wedding day, but it can also be stressful for some couples – there are few occasions when so many people will notice a single misstep! Many couples take lessons prior to the big day and, if possible, the wedding photographer should attend at least part of a lesson with them, or else photograph them practising prior to the actual wedding day. As Will Knight explains:

“Having the chance to photograph the couple before their wedding day can be invaluable in helping the photographer to visualise how best to capture the shots of the first dance on the wedding day. It can also benefit the happy couple enormously, as getting used to having their photograph taken while they are focusing on their dance moves can help them to relax when it comes to the actual performance of the dance on the big day.”
