May 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Construction projects on active passenger rail lines pose unique challenges and risks. Passenger transportation must continue with minimal disruption, and access is extremely limited due to the rail system design, location, and live wires overhead.

When it became necessary for the NICTD to install 10 catenary poles along the South Shore passenger rail line, they knew it would not be an easy task. The installation of concrete foundations along the active line would be an extremely difficult and dangerous project. Excavating a site to prepare for concrete requires holes to be dug, rebar to be placed, forms to be created, and many more procedures that would require a lot of manpower and equipment, therefore it would require a lot of space - space that is not available.

In its quest for a solution, the NICTD contracted Shaner Industries’ to install 10 foundations to support catenary poles along the active line. Shaner Industries designed metal foundations to specifically meet the requirements provided by the NICTD to not only support the catenary poles, but to also allow for installation in a low clearance area due to the live wires overhead.

The pre-engineered metal foundations were installed along a five-mile stretch of the NICTD South Shore passenger rail line between Michigan City and South Bend using a specialty piece of rail equipment to easily move along the rail line without the need for additional equipment. Each foundation and the catenary pole it was designed to support were installed simultaneously at specified times and locations along the rail line so the installation process did not interfere with peak passenger commute times.

“We offered a faster and safer solution. Our metal foundations were pre-engineered and delivered to the job site ready to install. Our installation methods completely eliminate the need for concrete, which allowed us to install the foundations along the live rail line in a fraction of the time it would have taken to install concrete foundations,” said Geoffrey Feidelberg, CEO of Shaner Industries. “Our metal foundations were installed quickly and safely with minimal disruption to commuters.”
