"Eighth grade is an important time in a child’s life. Lifestyle and fitness habits that begin when kids are 12 or 13 often last through adulthood," says Jessie Bringelson, membership, family and teen director at the Miller Y. "With our 8th Grade Membership Initiative, we provide a healthy and fun environment for Newbury Park eighth graders that we hope will prompt them to make responsible, positive choices now and later in life."
Eighth grade members will meet with a fitness coach to learn about the gym, how to properly use the equipment and set up a FitLinxx account, which enables members to monitor their workout progress.
Special events for eighth graders include intramural sports, sleepovers and a movie/pool night. Members can take part in classes especially designed for their age group: teen fitness classes, jazz/hip hop dance, introduction to guitar and cooking classes.
To sign up, teens entering eighth grade in the fall must present a school id and have a parent or guardian complete membership paperwork and sign a waiver. Once the paperwork is complete, the eighth grader can start coming to the Y as early beginning June 16. The membership includes three guest passes for use by parents or guardians.
