By: The Center for Urban Families Dr. Freeman Hrabowski has served as president of UMBC since 1992 and was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked UMBC the nation’s #1 “Up and Coming” university in 2008. He also was recently appointed by President Obama to chair the newly created President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. CFUF Founder and CEO, Joe Jones commented “We’re extremely honored that Dr. Hrabowski has signed on to be a part of one of the Center’s milestone events.” Past Urban Visionary Award recipients include Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children’s Zone; philanthropists Eddie and Sylvia Brown; Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund and her husband Peter Edelman, distinguished law professor at Georgetown; and Diane Bell-McKoy, President and CEO of the Associated Black Charities. Special recognition was also given to Campaign Manager of the Open Society Foundation’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement, Shawn Dove.
