Google's Nest Grab Begins IOE Arms Race

Google has purchased startup Nest, a move technologist Jason Hennessey calls the opening shot in big tech's battle for an “Internet of Everything.”

ATLANTA - May 13, 2014 - PRLog -- Google's  empire grew a little fatter last week with the acquisition of device startup Nest, which creates “smart” everyday items. Jason Hennessey of Atlanta's EverSpark Interactive (http://www.eversparkinteractive.com/) says Google's ambitions for the startup extend far beyond its current catalog, however, and aims at dominance in an age of an “Internet of Everything” (IOE).

Nest's current focus is on wi-fi enabled smoke detectors and thermostats, which allow owners to receive alerts or turn on the AC while they're not even home. The startup was formed by a team of ex-Apple creatives and sold to Google for $3.2 billion, according to Techland (http://techland.time.com/2014/01/13/googles-nest-acquisition-is-a-3-2-billion-bet-on-the-internet-of-things/) (retrieved 1.23.2014).

The IOE is the next expected step in the digital age, when consumers will see “smartness” and wi-fi added to almost all household items. Hennessey believes data-linked households, cars and appliances will change the marketplace—and the way life is lived.

“The high price tag of Nest indicates how strongly Google values a head start in the war for the Internet of Everything,” he says. “In five years the majority of everyday items will be available in a control-from-anywhere wireless form.”

Hennessey says that will offer consumers an untold level of control and personalization, as well as the benefits of using their own data.

“You could see how many calories you burned today by glancing at your email,” he said. “Or check to see if you left the stove range on without getting out of bed.”

Hennessey emphasizes that this next generation of everything-internet products is not hypothetical.

“At this year's Consumer Electronics Show almost every item had wireless connectivity,” he said. “Google's buy-in to the idea shows that the big players believe in it.”

“We used to think the future was robots. Now we know it's connection.”
