Toronto Boatel Hosts Weekend Retreat Raising Awareness for Childhood Cancer

TORONTO - May 13, 2014 - PRLog -- Making Waves Boatel is hosting “Girls Night INN” on the weekend of May 30, 2014. This will be an unforgettable weekend for three young girls who are battling cancer aboard Toronto’s only Boat Bed and Breakfast. The girls, ages 9 to 14, were chosen to experience a mini-vacation with their mothers – an opportunity for both to enjoy some time away from their everyday challenges of living with cancer.

“Our vision was to create a special weekend retreat for three young girls and their mothers as well as make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer” explains Diane Greene owner of Making Waves Boatel. “The goal was to rally our community, to increase awareness about the cause and to raise money for Childhood Cancer Canada,” says Greene. “The word cancer may not immediately call to mind children, but unfortunately there are many young people suffering from the disease, and they need our support.”

The girls were chosen after Childhood Cancer Canada reached out to 10 families - all from the Ontario area - who they felt would benefit from a weekend retreat. After much deliberation, three girls currently undergoing treatments were finally chosen. The names of the girls have been altered to protect their privacy.

• Lisa, from London, ON is 14 years old and was diagnosed with leukemia in September of 2011. She is undergoing her last chemo treatment in June of this year, and admits that losing her hair has been one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome emotionally.

• Haley, from Barrie, ON was diagnosed with a brain tumor after complaining of a severe headache in December of 2013. After an emergency surgery at midnight to remove the tumor, Ashley and her family continue to wait in the hopes that no chemo or radiation will be necessary.

• Emma from Victoria Harbour, ON is 9 years old and has an inoperable stage 4 brain tumor. Her loved ones rallied for her chance to be a part of this weekend.

The girls’ weekend will kick-off on Friday night with a special dinner reception on board the Boatel as a way for the girls and their mothers to get to know one another. On Saturday morning, the girls will each receive complementary passes on the City Sightseeing Toronto’s hop-on-hop-off bus. There will be stop at the Bata Shoe Museum, to view the latest shoe exhibit, a stop at Lick it Gelato to indulge in some delicious sweetness, and a boat cruise around the Toronto harbour courtesy of Mariposa Cruises. Once back at the Boatel, the girls will have a fun filled night of a pizza dinner courtesy of Pizzaiolo, board games and laughter. On Sunday morning, the girls will have the day to explore the city before they part ways and head home with special bonds that will last long past this weekend retreat.

“I am truly blown away by how much the community has rallied for this cause,” said Diane. Welcome gifts have been donated by BBCanada, Shoppers Drug Mart and Million Dollar Smiles. Via Rail Canada and Metrolinx have provided train transportation for each of the girls and their moms. Media relations work has been donated by BnBFinder.com and all print needs come courtesy of Icopy Express.

The goal is to raise $2500 for Childhood Cancer Canada. More information on the girls’ weekend itinerary and how to get involved can be found at http://www.boatel.ca/general/girls-night-inn
