These stories are narrated from the perspective of women, and they see love as a paradox: They fear this mysterious, evocative emotion could threaten their stability or even destroy them, but the act of love holds a transcendental dimension that could lead them to the lost paradise. Tightly bound to the magic of mythology, fate puts these women face to face with irresistible men. This and the force of their own nature launches them on journeys of self-discovery, as their turbulent emotions and philosophical outlook on love captivates readers.
What these women do to not lose themselves when they fall in love with impossible men will delight and surprise even the most well-versed reader. It’s hard not to admire their creativity and cheerful arrogance. Ultimately, it is their independence and indomitable nature that threatens everyone’s stability.
The titular short story “Out of Reach” features Isis, who tries to win the love of a NASA scientist. “The Fiction of Ella’s Reality” describes Ella’s ambition to capture her aloof lover by locking him into a work of fiction from which he cannot escape. “Our Place” finds Emma trapped in a life as though it were a work of fiction, so she can accept her out-of-touch lover in the privacy of their obsessions. The mythological “Out of the Ocean” offers a battle of wits between Isabella and a god-like man.
“Miranda's characters suffer through the tension between attraction and avoidance. The tales as a body of work reconcile the fears and desires that guide the heroines to their destiny, where a loss of self could lead to the discovery of new powers within them. As you prepare to read these tales, expect to find love’s seductive language, along with unlimited entertainment from the heroines as they are tantalized by what is out of their reach.” – Dr. Michael E. Wong-Russell, professor of Spanish and Latin American literature, Framingham State University
