Master Teacher offers Brazilian Samba Classes for Carnaval


Mary Dollar, one of the Bay Area’s leading master teachers of Brazilian Dance and artistic director of the acclaimed Samba do Coracao performance group, is offering Samba dance instruction for participation in the Carnaval 2014 parade in San Francisco on May 25. Classes are offered in three locations: two in San Francisco and one in Sausalito. Learn routines and join the parade with the Samba do Coração contingent.


Carnaval Parade: San Francisco Carnaval 2014 - 10 a.m., Sunday, May 25, 2014. Parade starts at the corner of 24th and Bryant Streets, then west to Mission Street; north on Mission to 17th Street; east to the Festival area.

Classes in three convenient locations:

“Brazilian Samba” Dance Classes - in San Francisco at Geary Dance Studio

Ongoing: Wednesdays, 7:30-9pm

Geary Dance Studio, 5036 Geary Blvd. at 15th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94118

Parade registration (if paid by May 18): Adult - $100; Student - $75; Family & Youth - $50

Cost for each class: Adults - $15; Students - $12; Family & Youth - $8

Professionally hand-sewn costume for additional fee.

Carnaval Parade Workshop: in San Francisco at Mary Sano Studio

Sunday May 11 & 18, 6-9 pm

CARNAVAL SAN FRANCSICO is the largest multi-cultural Carnaval parade in North America with more than 50 dance float contingents and thousands of dancers and musicians.

Dancing down the parade route with live Brazilian music is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and open to all ages and backgrounds. Lead dancers attend rehearsals and learn the routines prior to the parade date.

Samba do Coração (Samba from the Heart) is a samba school as well as a performing company, offering classes and shows in Brazilian dance and percussion year round. The contingent’s parade music is directed by Marcos Silva, internationally acclaimed Brazilian musician, composer, producer and educator. Original, award-winning costumes are designed by Mary Dollar and professionally sewn by Louise Garbardino, and are available for rent or purchase.

Directed by Mary Dollar, this multi-talented troupe is dedicated to the growth of Brazilian culture in the San Francisco Bay Area, inspired by the many dances and rhythms of Brazil. The group’s specialty is Samba, yet its repertoire is rich and varied, and each dance number is brilliantly costumed.

Samba do Coração has received top awards, including First Place in dance, music, costumes and overall visuals. For two consecutive years, the group has also been honored as San Francisco Carnaval’s Best Brazilian Group," as well as receiving Second Grand Prize Overall.
