Follow on Google News | Downtown Phoenix Art Gallery Organizes the Mortal Kombat for Artists this SummerProbably closer related to the reality show "Survivor," Shade Projects will present a competition exhibition this summer for artists to compete for the THERMAL PHX title and a solo exhibition.
By: monOrchid/ Shade Projects Last summer Shade Projects Art Program Director Justin Germain curated THERMAL PHX as a straight forward group show, which was a success, but the length proved to make it a bit stale, so he decided to change up the format to ensure excitement through the whole summer. "I wanted to do this in 2013, but we didn't have the infrastructure yet so we really just set the stage to see if we could get artists involved in a summer long exhibition," Here is how it will work... Each month the artists will create artwork along a specific theme decided upon by the exhibiiton panel. The monthly "rounds" will open on First Fridays in June, July, and August for the public to view, and vote for their favorite. Germain says, " We wanted to make sure we involve the community, give them a reason to come out and see the show, so why not give them a say in who wins?" Each month 3 of the Shade Projects curatorial staff and a guest judge will combine their thoughts with the public opinion and eliminate a number of the artists. Those left will move on and create new work for the following round. In August, one artist will be left standing and win the competition. The eliminations will be held during Third Fridays each month, where the judges will critique the work and decide who stays and who goes home. The public event dates are as follows: Round One – First Friday Opening – June 6, 6-10pm Third Friday Critique and Elimination – June 20, 6-10pm Round Two – First Friday Opening – July 4, 6-10pm Third Friday Critique and Elimination – June 18, 6-10pm Round Three – First Friday Opening – August 1, 6-10pm Third Friday Critique and Elimination – August 15, 6-10pm The monOrchid is located in the heart of the downtown Phoenix Roosevelt arts district at 214 Roosevelt St. The building is open daily from 9am - 5pm.
