CHARLOTTE, N.C. - May 7, 2014 - PRLog -- The 2014 celebration of National Poetry Month may be over, but the momentum to show how poetry affects the arts, humanities and literacy throughout the state of North Carolina is intensifying for poet Kym Gordon Moore. Moore, who is the author of Wings of the Wind A Cornucopia of Poetry, went on a personal crusade to ask mayors throughout the state to issue a mayoral proclamation recognizing April as National Poetry Month. After discovering that only two mayors representing cities in North Carolina issued a proclamation since 2005 to the Academy of American Poets, Moore wanted to see greater representation for the state. Eighteen North Carolina mayors agreed to issue a proclamation after receiving a kind request from her.

National Poetry Month was inaugurated in 1996, by the Academy of American Poets. This observance of poetry, held annually in April is designed to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture, while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in many places where it is practiced and appreciated. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the United States, band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

Kym Gordon Moore began her proclamation crusade by asking Mayor Michael Alvarez of Indian Trail to issue one on behalf of the town. He not only complied, but presented the proclamation at the “My Favorite Poet-in-Motion” celebration, kicking off National Poetry Month at the Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center, on Saturday April 5. Mayors who also joined in this personal crusade by issuing a poetry proclamation included: Mayor Lydia Lavelle (Carrboro), Mayor Alfonzo King (Goldsboro), Mayor Dana Outlaw (New Bern), Mayor William Sutton (Apex), Mayor William Moore (Fletcher), Mayor William Lewis (Havelock), Mayor Wayne Tuggle (Eden), Mayor Esther Manheimer (Asheville), Mayor William Bell (Durham), Mayor Miles Atkins (Mooresville), Mayor Sammy Phillips (Jacksonville), Mayor Lee Moritz, Jr. (Conover), Mayor Dan Clodfelter (Charlotte), Mayor John Woods (Davidson), Mayor Vivian Jones (Wake Forest), Mayor Brien Lassiter (Ahoskie) and Mayor Wyatt Dunn (Stallings).

“Poetry is a movement. It is alive and vibrant, contrary to what many feel is a dying genre,” says Moore. “After talking ‘poetry’ with a few politicians during general conversation, I found an endearing and gentle side to these political figures, regardless of party affiliation. Their faces would light up when talking about this genre and many shared stories or quotes by their favorite poets. These mayoral proclamations are clearly evident of how poetry influences the various elements of the arts, literature, humanities and even politics throughout our fascinating state. It was indeed an honor to receive these mayoral proclamations issued during National Poetry Month.” Moore also moderates F-R-E-E monthly poetry events at the Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center, which includes participation from multi-media artists, poets, musicians and anyone who loves the art of poetry.
