NAPERVILLE, Ill. - May 6, 2014 - PRLog -- According to the ipPerformance Group Corporate Patent Intelligence Best Practices Report

Naperville, April 24, 2014 - ipPerformance Group, a leader in benchmarking corporate intellectual property law and management operations, announces the release of its Corporate Patent Intelligence Best Practices Report. The findings indicate that companies use more than four patent intelligence systems to conduct patent intelligence studies, and on average conduct nine types of studies. TThe findings also suggest that companies conduct the majority of their patent intelligence studies for legal risk mitigation and analysis, but they are increasing their use of patent intelligence to develop business strategies.

"Business leaders are realizing that understanding the competitive IP landscape is one of the critical elements in the rapid development and implementation of technology to create value. So increasingly, companies are conducting proactive analysis of the patent landscape as part of their innovation process," says Robert Williamson, president of ipPerformance Group. "It's clear that the majority of companies rely on numerous online systems and select the best patent intelligence system to meet specific objectives."

Among the findings that emerged from this research are the following:

- 52% of companies indicate that the chief IP/patent counsel is responsible for patent intelligence. Overall, companies indicated three functions are responsible.
- R&D leadership is reported by 81% of the companies to be the leadership function that is most knowledgeable about the value of using patent intelligence.
- 61% of companies indicate that they outsource patent intelligence requirements. The leading reason is lack of resources, databases or tools in-house.
- Innography, Thomson Innovation, Questel Orbit and Minesoft PatBase received the top overall scores. The full scorecard reflects 21 attributes to evaluate each system.

Forty-seven companies representing a variety of industries participated in this comprehensive study, including Crown Packaging, Zebra Technologies Corp., Visa, Tessera, Scil Proteins, Sasol, PepsiCo, Nova Measuring Instruments Ltd, Kimberly-Clark, ITT Corporation, GE, and Cytec Industries Inc.
