JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 2, 2014 - PRLog -- The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has made a $3,500 donation to Nourishment Network, formerly Second Harvest Food Bank.

“The chapter recognizes the important mission of Nourishment Network in distributing food and grocery products to hungry people and to educate the public about the causes and possible solutions to problems of domestic hunger in our community,” said AIA Jacksonville Chapter Past President Tom Hurst, AIA.

AIA Jacksonville serves architects, associate and allied members in Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties. The donation came from the Annual AIA Holiday Affair event.

“Our charitable focus as a professional organization includes being responsive to the needs of our community. Helping feed those less fortunate is certainly a high priority,” said Sumner L. Pedigo, LEED AP, who helped coordinate the donation.

One dollar donated to Nourishment Network generates seven meals. Nourishment Network is a service of Lutheran Social Services and serves 17 counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee and Union.

“We rely on community support from organizations like AIA to rescue an enormous volume of food and stretch each dollar incredibly far. And because of our lean staff and the generosity of our volunteers, more of every donation goes directly to our programs — not to overhead,” said Lutheran Social Services President R. Wayne Rieley.
