By: The Children's Gallery and Arts Center “Silhouette and Melody” is an innovative multi-cultural project that brings together plastic arts and music. It offers many opportunities to children to craft original figurative and abstract works of art that describe their feelings about music, mainly melodies close to their heart due to their own cultural heritage. The project entails a fusion of various aspects; in which mechanics, ideas and material components will be blended together by spiritual force. Carlos Franco, Gallery and Project Director explained that this project is challenging, “participants are communicating their feelings to the audience visually, by sharing their musical traditions through images without words or sounds. People looking at them should feel the type of music theiy are referring to by relating to the images. Artworks created are portraying these parallels on the very basic or fundamental level for both disciplines, visual arts and music; which are constantly changing and evolving for they cannot be still”. Each student will create several artworks after listening to different pieces of music (including classical, jazz and choral) but only the final pieces will be part of an art show when the project is concluded. The project is being sponsored by Homestead Center for the Arts through a Pass-thru Grant given by Miami-Dade County department of Cultural Affairs and Macy’s, who have been in partnership with this nonprofit organization for these past four years. It is also expected that another giant retailer, Target, will soon join them in the patronage of the project that benefits not only the students participating but also the community at large. More than 60 percent of the children participating in this project have special needs or a disability. Contact Information: http://www.thechildrensgalleryartscenter.org End
