Poor Infrastructure of India’s Mental Health Hospitals

MEHRAULI, India - April 29, 2014 - PRLog -- Mental health infrastructure in India has been seemed to be neglected since independence.Delhi, Ranchi, Agra and Gwalior are three prominent places where India’s top mental health hospitals are running under the supervision of Indian government. Since the establishment of these hospitals, there are no such development in terms of infrastructure and treatment. Tragic is that every 2 out of 10 people in India are suffering from a mental health conditions. The latest report says that 125 million Indians have a kind of mental health problem and more than 50 million Indians are diagnosed with chronic psychosis.

Indian government has not yet taken any stiff decision for improvement of  mental health infrastructure in the country. The fact of poor mental health infrastructure is not unknown to  government officials but they are indifferent to it. Most mental health hospitals are in unimaginable and terrible condition, Poor inadequate facilities have been noticed. There are cases where patients are treated badly , unnecessarily given electric shocks treatment and are chained. Neglect from family members towards mentally  sick has also been noticed.

Private mental health hospitals have shown a ray of hope in India for providing quality treatment to patients suffering from  mental illness. Various mental health care providers like Tulasi Healthcare ,run customized rehabilitation programs for  mental health problems like schizophrenia, anxiety, bipolar disorder etc… Each patient is examined carefully and a unique treatment plan is made for each one. Both medicines and rehabilitation  considerably increase the chance of improvement of sick .Senior consultant Psychiatrist Dr Puneet Dwevedi at Fortis hospital is of the opinion that more mental health facilities are required to deal with the increasing population of mentally unwell patients. As the returns from psychiatric setups are less not many entrepreneur are willing to invest in these projects.

Dr Vijay Shrivastva another psychiatrist trained at CIP Ranchi commented that there are not  many mental institutions hence the existing onces have to  deal with large number of patients. The care gets compromised as the doctor to patient  ratio is very low. Each psychiatrist on an average sees between 200 to 250 patients in OPD.

Dr Gorav Gupta Senior Consultant at Tulasi Healthcare founder says, “We are  available with new and effective treatments for patients with mental illnesses. Our rehab programs are designed to improve the lives of mentally ill people.”
