ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - April 30, 2014 - PRLog -- In celebration of National Poetry Month observed every year in April, Mayor Brien Lassiter of Ahoskie, North Carolina issued his official Mayoral Proclamation in recognition of this literary event. National Poetry Month is the largest literary celebration in the world. Mayor Lassiter joins several mayors throughout North Carolina, at the kind request of poet Kym Gordon Moore, to issue this historical declaration representing the state and the Town of Ahoskie.

In 1996, the Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month, which is celebrated every April in the United States. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, book displays, festivals, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the nation. Schools, libraries, publishers, booksellers and poets throughout the country, band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

Mayor Lassiter is very active in the community and this is a great indicator of how he understands and connects with the pulse of the engaging programs and events Ahoskie offers. He is involved with athletic and youth activities, such as coaching youth baseball. In celebration of National Poetry Month, the library at Hertford County High School in Ahoskie sponsored a Found Poetry contest. The objective behind Found Poetry is to create poetry from words or phrases from everyday life. A bulletin board featured words and phrases to provide inspiration for student and faculty writers who wanted to submit their poems to the competition. Poetry is an essential part of the arts and humanities throughout the state of North Carolina and around the country. The Town of Ahoskie seeks to promote, encourage and support a high quality of life for all of its citizens. As a rural community, the town embraces the diversity of all citizens, relying heavily upon its heritage, faith based and family oriented communities.
