Jones of Wake Forest, North Carolina issued a Mayoral Proclamation to celebrate this event. National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996.
By: Mayor Vivian Jones The Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month in 1996, which is celebrated every April in the United States. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, book displays, festivals, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the nation. Schools, libraries, publishers, booksellers and poets throughout the country, band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. “We are pleased to join other communities in supporting poetry. It is important for us to realize how much poetry enhances our lives and we want to remind our citizens to take advantage of this resource for their enjoyment,” stated Mayor Jones. The town is rich in historical roots and is ranked as one of the safest cities in North Carolina according to a study by SafeWise. Its growth and development is enhanced by actively promoting the area through family activities and programs, which encourage businesses to prosper. The cultural programs offered through the Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of programs, classes and special events throughout the year, for youth and adults. The performance garden in E. Carroll Joyner Park is ideal for poetry readings, music workshops, small symphony groups and storytelling. Poetry has inspired some of Wake Forest’s artists in fields such as visual arts, theatre, music, film and dance. To date, Mayor Jones is the town’s longest serving mayor and is a passionate ambassador and respected advocate for the community. She currently serves on the ElectriCities Board of Directors and is a member of the Triangle Transit Board of Trustees.
