QUEENS, N.Y. - April 28, 2014 - PRLog -- Each year as the weather warms up in New York City,  LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service reports the incidence of head lice climbs. This year is like every other year. According to owner, Wendy Beck, "Warm weather means that children engage outside in informal play dates as well as in organized sports. The type of  active and physical contact facilitates the transmission of lice from head to head, which is the most common way for someone to pick up a case of lice. This year, we are getting twice the number of calls from infested families in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn as we did last year at this time."

In an effort to help families to reduce the chances of becoming infested with lice, LiceDoctors lectures at schools and offers webinars to school nurses on the topic of lice prevention. The next webinar is Thursday, May 1 at 8 pm and is available free to school personnel as to the public.

According to Beck, it important for children long hair to wear their hair up in a braid or bun. The less accessible that the hair is, the more difficult it is for the lice to crawl into it. In addition, parents should add mousse or spray or a lice repellent in their child’s hair. The products adds a protective layer on the hair, which makes it more difficult for lice to attach to the hair. Children should not share combs or other hair accessories.

With regard to overnight dates or slumber parties, which can be a problem when it comes to head lice, LiceDoctors recommends that chldren bring their own pillow.  When the child returns home, she should be checked in front of a bright window or under a bright light.

Beck reports that a major contributing factor to head lice increases is that lice have developed greater resistance to the chemical treatments. These lice are called "super lice".  "Parents assume that after treatment with these products that the child is good to go. Often, there are still live lice and nits in the hair, and the child eventually transmits those bugs to others."

In addition, the more lenient school lice policies in New York City, which allow students with nits to remain in school,  may be contributing to the increase in the incidence.

Beck explains that the benefits of a professional lice treatment service are high.  "We are experts and we will get rid of the lice infestation. We guarantee it. In addition, we come to your home so you don't have to schlep out to a clinic somewhere. Often the cost of our services is lower than a salon and we check everyone in the family. In addition, LiceDoctors educates families about how to identify lice, how to prevent lice infestations and how lice are transmitted, This way, they will be armed should they ever face head lice in the future."
